With the capture of Verandi Farley and several high-ranking Trossach members, the British wizarding world has finally caught a break. The rate of rogue werewolf attacks have started dropping at a steady rate and, hopefully, things will stay that way. The Ministry is starting to loosen some restrictions, like not arresting werewolves standing on the street for loitering, however there’s still an obvious power imbalance between wizardfolk and werewolves.
The Cotswolds pack are continuing to advocate for the rights of werewolves and petitioning to change the legislation that has been set in motion by the current Minister for Magic, whilst the remaining Trossachs members are trying to stay out of the spotlight and keep a low profile… for now.
Whilst the British wizarding world seems to have calmed down, the same cannot be said for over in Northern Europe where a rebellion of magical creatures has risen. The state of things has gotten so bad that the European Ministry has enacted protocols to protect those under eighteen whilst their adult witches and wizards fight to keep control of their countries.
Students from Durmstrang have been sent to Hogwarts to keep them safe and those not old enough to attend school have been sent to live with relatives or designated British Ministry officials outside of Europe for the time being.
Will the low rates of werewolf attacks in Britain continue? How long will Durmstrang students stay at Hogwarts? Will the creatures usurp the wizardfolk in Northern Europe? Only time will tell.
SEPTEMBER 2019 It's been a very long, eventful summer in the wizarding world. A baby was stolen, several high ranking Trossach members were imprisoned, and werewolf attacks have drastically dropped as a result. What will happen now school has returned?
MAY 2019 An attempt to capture the beta of the Trossachs has been launched. Were the Aurors successful in their mission? Go read more here!
It was Jack's sixteenth year of teaching at Hogwarts as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and he had to say, he was quite happy with the fact he had lasted so long in this position. Back when he was a student, everyone used to say it was 'cursed' thanks to Voldemort - something Jack believed to be true back then and especially now. It certainly didn't seem like a coincidence that after Voldemort had died, that the professors lasted longer than just one school year. When Jack had gotten the position so long ago, he'd taken over from a woman who had been there for a record-breaking two years who had claimed to be retiring because she was 'getting on' and because she wanted to 'spend time with my grandchildren.'
Standing by his desk, a cup of steaming coffee in his hand, Jack hoped that this year wasn't going to be his last - he certainly didn't plan on it. He had at least twenty more years in him to teach the future generation of witches and wizards his favourite topic.
As the students filed in, Jack waited until the seats were full before giving them all a warm smile. "Good afternoon, everyone. I know most of you know me from past years, but for those of you who are just joining us, my name is Professor O'Connor," he said, nodding his head curtly. "Now, rules are the same as they have been in the past - raise your hand, be civil to one another, and feel free to come to my office if you need to discuss anything. It's always open and I'm glad to talk if need me." Jack paused, letting that sink in before he added, "Now, as this is a N.E.W.T. class, I will remind you that this is an elective and you chose to take this. As a result, I expect you all to perform like you would like to be here - that means performing in class and doing all additional work expected of you in time."
Moving along from the rules, Jack waved his hand at the chalkboard in the corner, the words: HEXES, CURSES, JINXES AND THEIR COUNTERPARTS, appearing in large letters. "This is what we will be learning about today. Now, to start things off - I want three different students to define what a hex, a curse and a jinx is."
6'0". IRISH. BIG HEART. LOYAL. BRAVE. WORKAHOLIC. BISEXUAL. SINGLE. distinguishing features: a big scar runs across jack's left cheek credit for award goes to ollie! <3
maybe it is all a test/'cause i feel like i'm the worst, so i always act like i'm the best

light up the sky
This year, there was much to prove. The punishments for what Mia-Rose had done in July were completely humiliating--she hadn't left the island where the farm was located since then, and her parents still hadn't decided whether they would let her go to Hogsmeade when the first visit came up, which would mean having to explain it all to her classmates, and feel even more embarrassed...
No, she was going to start the year out by being impressive, and good at things, and doing her best to forget about the scar on her shoulder, which was covered up by her robes and how tight she'd knotted her green tie. Maybe too tight, but then it wouldn't come undone and reveal the red mark. She gave a glance to her sister across the classroom, who was sitting alone--finally, perhaps, not being glued to her boyfriend at all times--before raising her hand, waiting for the professor to call on her.
"A curse is the most serious type of Dark charm, that causes the most damage," she said. "It's really kind of arbitrary, though, isn't it? Can you really put the Jelly-Legs Curse and the Unforgivable Curses in the same category?"

Adrian stepped into class, the corner of his eyes crinkling as he surveyed the room. He was first in, but that was due to his headstart on the rest of his peers. The aimless chattering of the Hufflepuff table had grated on his nerves, and he'd left in a huff before the bell. He gave a solemn nod to Professor O'Connor and moved to the first row of desks, close to the wall. He wasn't in the mood for a chat; he thought it was best if he kept himself for the rest of the day. He stayed silent, drawing spirals on the margin of his page as the seniors shuffled in. Defence Against the Dark Arts wasn't his best subject, but he worked hard to get the grades he did, and couldn't afford to be distracted in class.
He didn't respond to the question posed to the class, just carefully noting it down and writing his personal answer before poising to write the teachers. He huffed inaudible as Mia-Rose queried about why the two were placed in the same category. It seemed clear to Adrian that they both incapacitated someone- but one was stronger than the other. She might think the Jelly-Leg Jinx was harmless, but it was a nasty curse that caused an opponent a major disadvantage. He scribbled down a few examples of curses on the page, ones that came off of the top of his head.

Despite taking this class for six years running, Grace had to admit that DADA? It wasn't her favourite class. In fact, usually, it instilled her with nerves so bad that it made her nauseous. But that wasn't quite the case today. She'd been practicing a lot in the holidays, namely with Alana and Aiden, and she felt like... maybe she'd gotten better, a little more confident when it came to defensive spells. Perhaps they'd actually work when it came time to use them in class.
Tucking a few blonde strands behind her ear, Grace scanned the classroom for a seat before smiling over at Arthur, beelining towards him. She had to admit - she hadn't exactly planned on sharing her seventh year with her big brother... in fact, she'd insisted that she wouldn't be to a few people last year, confident that he was going to pass his NEWTs. But... it was kind of nice, in a way, knowing that their last year at Hogwarts would be shared together. "You'll go with me if we have to do pairs, right?" she asked him, setting up her table.
When Professor O'Connor started his spiel on what he expected this year, Grace was rapt with attention, nodding as she did every other year. She definitely planned on following the rules, lest she wind up in trouble. She didn't like to interrupt people anyway - it was rude, after all - and she wouldn't dream of using magic on another person to harm them, so being a rule abider was fairly straightforward.
As they delved into the lesson and Mia-Rose answered what a curse was, Grace raised her own hand before answering, "A hex... it's a type of dark magic, one that's worse than a jinx but not as bad as a curse. Usually people use hexes to cause a medium amount of suffering on their victim."

Junaid was glad to be back in class. It felt strange wearing his roommate’s uniform, but Gabriel was roughly his size. Maybe he would’ve earned enough money with his part time job to buy a new set for himself. Since his own books had burned down, Jun borrowed most of his books from the library. Unfortunately, the DADA books were all rented out. When he arrived at class, he didn’t spot Greyson who had offered to lean his books, but he did saw Adrian. “Oh! Adrian, is it okay if I sit with you? Would you mind sharing your book? I don’t have one,” he asked with the sweetest smile.
As class was starting, he decided to sit down. He read the board and wondered if they’d be practicing magic today. That’d be lucky because he did have his wand still. A Slytherin girl answered the question about curses and Grace shared what hexes were. Jun decided to go for the last shot. He felt a lot more confident in his English skills to speak up in class after two years of Hogwarts. He rose his hand like a good student and waited for his name to be called. “Jinxes while originating from dark arts, are considered rather irritating but amusing instead of causing direct pain. Despite that they’re considered less harmful than Hexes and Curses, I do believe they can cause a lot of trouble. They’re often used for bullying, which is not a nice act. Don’t bully anyone for your own amusement. I’ll catch you and give you a detention you’ll remember when you’re in your fifties,” he said firmly, wanting to be a more reliable prefect this year than the year before.
Of all the subjects Kalevi had chosen for Hogwarts, he had been looking forward most to Defense Against the Dark Arts. The only question to remain was whether he would still be looking forward to it after meeting the professor--a single speech at the feast told him little about what the man was like. Especially with the warm welcome he'd given to the guests--Kalevi knew it was only polite, but he could not help but wonder if the professor knew what had happened to him.
Still, he was determined to put in the effort in this class. And so he had come with an extra mug of coffee from the Great Hall, which he had taken with a reminder to himself to return the cup at the next meal. Whether he would actually remember remained to be seen, but the desire to be awake outweighed any fear of retaliation by the house-elves.
He wasn't sure who seemed the safest to sit by. The class seemed fairly full by the time he'd arrived, and he glanced around, spotting a handful of Durmstrang uniforms and resolving to be far away from those. Instead, he took a seat near the wall, next to a Hufflepuff who seemed quite determined not to be talking to anyone, which suited Kalevi perfectly well.
As the class began, Kalevi raised the mug to his face, not wanting to give away any reaction at the mention of curses. It wasn't that he didn't want to hear about them--the reason he was here was to learn how to deal with them--but the memories were fresh enough that it still created a painful lurch in his stomach to hear about the Unforgivables.
