With the capture of Verandi Farley and several high-ranking Trossach members, the British wizarding world has finally caught a break. The rate of rogue werewolf attacks have started dropping at a steady rate and, hopefully, things will stay that way. The Ministry is starting to loosen some restrictions, like not arresting werewolves standing on the street for loitering, however there’s still an obvious power imbalance between wizardfolk and werewolves.
The Cotswolds pack are continuing to advocate for the rights of werewolves and petitioning to change the legislation that has been set in motion by the current Minister for Magic, whilst the remaining Trossachs members are trying to stay out of the spotlight and keep a low profile… for now.
Whilst the British wizarding world seems to have calmed down, the same cannot be said for over in Northern Europe where a rebellion of magical creatures has risen. The state of things has gotten so bad that the European Ministry has enacted protocols to protect those under eighteen whilst their adult witches and wizards fight to keep control of their countries.
Students from Durmstrang have been sent to Hogwarts to keep them safe and those not old enough to attend school have been sent to live with relatives or designated British Ministry officials outside of Europe for the time being.
Will the low rates of werewolf attacks in Britain continue? How long will Durmstrang students stay at Hogwarts? Will the creatures usurp the wizardfolk in Northern Europe? Only time will tell.
SEPTEMBER 2019 It's been a very long, eventful summer in the wizarding world. A baby was stolen, several high ranking Trossach members were imprisoned, and werewolf attacks have drastically dropped as a result. What will happen now school has returned?
MAY 2019 An attempt to capture the beta of the Trossachs has been launched. Were the Aurors successful in their mission? Go read more here!
Negative Traits: absentminded, easily distracted, overextends himself without noticing, people pleaser
Quirks and Habits: -Jēkabs has a very hard time sitting still, and he's been like that for as long as he can remember. He’s always bouncing his leg or messing with something in his hands. -He thinks dressing formally is really uncomfortable, and only does it if he absolutely has to. -He likes having long hair, but it also tends to get in the way of his vision when playing Quidditch, so he keeps growing it and then cutting it again. -He’s very insistent that his daughter should speak his language fluently despite growing up in Britain, and even though she’s a newborn he only speaks to her in Latvian.
Likes: Quidditch, his brother Jānis, his baby daughter Laura, basketball, eating a lot of food, sunshine, strawberries, his cat Mellene
Dislikes: balancing Muggle and wizard lives, arguments with his girlfriend, weird tea his grandmother makes, the werewolf who bit Jānis
Boggart: his brother’s dead wolf form
Mirror of Erised: a potion labeled “cure for lycanthropy”
Patronus: brown bear cub
history
1995. Some people never seem to have luck on their side. Ieva Eglīte was one such person. That must have been why she ended up having identical twins Jēkabs and Jānis when she was barely eighteen, because apparently just one of them wasn't enough. Instead of going to university, she moved into an apartment with her boyfriend Kaspars Smiltiņš and did her best. It was all she could do.
1997. The twins were two years old and, to put it lightly, a handful. So that was the year when their father decided he couldn't deal anymore--not with the fighting between Ieva and himself and the struggles of raising children. He left town, sending child support but not much else over the years.
2001. Nobody really noticed anything weird when Jēkabs and Jānis went to school. After all, they were rambunctious little kids, who could easily do things like sneak extra food out of the cafeteria when they were hungry--of course, little Jēkabs didn't quite understand how it ended up on his plate, but it was easy enough to blame his twin. They looked alike, so it was probably just that they'd gotten mixed up again, right? It wasn't like it was possible to summon food right to your plate...
2006. That was the year when some people in weird robes showed up at the door, asking to speak to the family. Not only were they there to explain that the twins were wizards, but also to give them a choice: what school they would go to. After all, Latvia didn't have a wizarding school of its own. Durmstrang was a common choice, but there was one problem there--they didn't accept Muggleborns. And as neither of them spoke French, Beauxbatons was out. So it came down to Koldovstoretz or Hogwarts, and Ieva made the choice for them, sending them to Scotland.
2007. Jēkabs and Jānis entered their second year at Hogwarts and joined something that made being at school much better: Quidditch. Even though they had never even seen a broomstick before they went to school, their skills from growing up playing basketball transferred perfectly to being Chasers. They were naturals, and it was something that would follow them even past school. Especially if they weren't allowed to compete in Muggle sports anymore, a bit of the Statute of Secrecy that upset Jēkabs’s dreams of being a basketball star someday.
2014. Graduating from Hogwarts as Hufflepuff’s star Chasers meant that Jēkabs and Jānis could have played in the British and Irish Quidditch League, but instead they went home to play for their country’s national team. They started off as reserves, but found themselves in a regular spot in the next couple years as they prepared to compete, hoping to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
2018. Quidditch World Cup qualifications: the moment Jēkabs had been waiting for since he'd found out about the existence of this World Cup. He knew it was unlikely that Latvia would win the whole thing, but he was excited to go up against some of the best players in the world. And then a couple of things happened.
First, meeting Tuuli Saar: Estonia's young heroine of a Seeker, who pulled off a wild upset against one of the most formidable opponents. They met at a victory party after that game, but became quick friends--and more. Second, the recruiters. The Chudley Cannons' coach, tired of the team's motto being “let's all just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best” for the last century or so, had come to the World Cup to scout foreign talent, since to be honest--nobody in Britain wanted to play for them anymore. And how lucky that Latvia's twin pair of Chasers had been educated at Hogwarts, so they were already familiar with living in the UK. Tuuli, too, was picked as another recruit for the team.
Jēkabs and Jānis moved into an apartment together in Britain to start training with the Chudley Cannons in the fall. But it wasn’t long before they were joined by Tuuli as well, as she’d been kicked off the team for the year--turned out she wasn’t going to be much of a star Seeker if she was pregnant, and they decided it would be better to try to raise their child with their parents together, if they could. Jēkabs didn't want to turn into his own father.
And then Jānis was bitten.
No more Quidditch, no more anything. It was down to one salary, one apartment, three people (and a cat). Two of whom hated each other, putting Jēkabs in the middle. Jānis was bitter over what had happened to him, Tuuli was determined to throw out the werewolf before she had a baby around. Jēkabs found himself stressed to the limit, his coach swearing that they saw him fall asleep on his broomstick in practice once.
2019. The end of February brought Jēkabs a new source of happiness in the form of his daughter, Laura, but the tension in the household now seemed to require Sectumsempra to cut. And so did the tension in the whole country, making Jēkabs feel like the trouble would never end.
"Ah--it's Emil. Emil Zalewski." Emil felt suddenly very awkward, even as the professor welcomed him in. Maybe he hadn't been good enough in class to be remembered. Still, he set his bag down on the floor, taking the seat that Professor O'Keeffe had offered him. "Tea would be nice, sure." He glanced over at the cat on the windowsill, who was extremely intent on catching what seemed to be a bug flying around. The boy didn't have any pets, and it hadn't occurred to him that cats chased bugs as well as mice--it was sort of cute, really, if he ignored what the cat would inevitably do with its prey once it caught it.
He turned his eyes back to the professor as the man began to search for some sort of documents, and his eyes widened when O'Keeffe brought out a book that contained just the additional information he'd wanted.
"Transcripts? Are they in English, could I read them?" Emil asked, sounding hopeful. He knew they might not be, not everything was translated, but he always loved getting to look at the real documents. He hadn't doubted that the werewolf in question was really a wizard, although it was nice to have confirmation, but he wanted to know more.
"I sort of assumed he wasn't a werewolf at all," Emil said, "but something else--like I said before, an Animagus, or maybe some other form of magic? Like a Polyjuice Potion, but for animals." The stories about him said that he rampaged and killed livestock, but also that he battled evil witches. How could a creature who lost their mind fight against evil? "But maybe you know more than me. Is there more out there to read?"
