This was what separated the wolves from their lesser, human wizard counterparts. Verandi’s pack members all had their orders and just like wolves in the wild, their sights were set on one goal:
rescue the kids. For all of Lupin’s bullshit propaganda about her pack, it would be
them that liberated the unfortunate teenagers whilst the Cotswolds sat back and chatted over tea and biscuits with the aurors.
Good, let them. Hopefully they’ll be too round to put up much of a fight.
Verandi would have very much liked to organise the strike for a full moon, so that her bites were far worse than her bark. Alas the Cursebreaker hadn’t come through with the wolfsbane potions and they couldn’t wait
another month. Clear heads, in the end, prevailed over Verandi’s bloodlust.
”Above all - don’t get caught. Breaking a bunch of kids out of St Mungo’s is one thing, I will not jeopardise the safety of the pack by risking an Azkaban rescue should any of you get caught,” Verandi warned all those involved. She took a moment to look into each and every one of their eyes and waited for the nod of acknowledgement before the pack broke off to their assignments.
Verandi quickly popped the top of a small vial of potion and quickly her body morphed into the much larger one of Mr Teddy Lupin. It was not often that she tolerated the goody-two-shoes, but special circumstances like these called for... unpleasant company to discuss wolf issues. Of course Verandi had left with what she needed; a strand of hair. The wolf had witnessed many times over how often Teddy was at St Mungo’s and decided that his face wouldn’t be questioned unlike hers. As the huntress attempted to walk like a man into St Mungo’s - lead with the penis? Not the hips? How the hell do these guys walk with this thing... Verandi paused as she came across a WANTED poster with her face on it and took a moment to look at it and adjust herself before she continued again.
More than a few people greeted Verandi and received a curt nod in reply as the woman tried to focus on her mission and reach the Dai Llewyn Ward.
”Hey, love,” yes, Teddy was the kind of imbecile that would call a ward-clerk something so... benign.. Verandi forced a dazzling smile to which the young woman swooned. Merlin.
”I just wanted to chat with the Hogwarts kid... let him know that his sister’s ok, she’s with us and to... oh no, no you don’t need to call the matron -“ fuck. Verandi pulled her wand and cast a non-verbal petrificus totalis on the girl.
”Stay. Good girl,” Verandi grinned wickedly and pet the clerk on the head a little too hard as she walked on by.
Aurors.
Merlin’s merciful aunt, why were there aurors there for this kid? Was he one of the main culprits? Verandi was about to turn around and leave when the explosion caught their attention.
Perfect timing. Verandi quickly made it to the kid’s room and saw ... well a kid. The woman had little time for children, but the young teenager looked up at her as frightened as a four year old
and it disgusted her. ”Get your things, kid, we’re leaving. Hurry, hurry,” Verandi whispered tersely, keeping an eye on the chaos that was massing towards the explosion.
Why do people always run towards an explosion?
”Stop asking me fucking questions. It’s time to go.” She roughly pulled the child out of the room and made her way out through the service entrance.
Thank Merlin she knew the service crew at St Mungo’s ....... but apparently Teddy did not.
”Oh, uh I ... seem to have taken a wrong turn... some... where,” Verandi lied when she was approached by a shrewd house elf. It was making eyes at the spooked kid.
”I’m just trying to get my buddy out of here... he’s scared of loud explosion noises after what happened at Hogwarts. Look, I think he’s having a panic attack -“ Verandi internally groaned as she saw the sweaty kid drain of colour. The house elf let them past then.
”Thank you. Thank you so much.” For getting out of the way you sack of shit, Verandi finished the thought viciously in her mind before she picked the child up over her shoulder. Wow. Muscles.
The moment Verandi was out of St Mungo’s she whipped out her wand once more and apparated the fainting wonder and herself to the agreed upon rendezvous.
”Wake up you heavy little fucker,” Verandi said as she pointed her wand at the boy and a hose like gush of cold water left the tip and straight into his face.
”We’ll be seeing your co-conspirators shortly.”The camp was bare, except for those willing to use any curse necessary on any uninvited guests. Verandi had to ensure the safety of the pack, after all.
Everything was ready. They had their orders from Verandi, they’d split up into pairs, just normal people visiting their relatives in St. Mungo’s… Nothing that might be out of the ordinary. Nothing at all. Rue patted down her jacket one last time to make sure it looked neat and clean instead of having been laying on a tent floor for a month, and adjusted her braids to make sure they would stay flat against her head, providing nothing for anyone to grab onto. She had learned how bad that would be in a fight.
This whole endeavour had been enough reason to put the effort into arranging a bathing day for the entire camp. While the sight of hot water after several months of wintry dirt was glorious, they didn’t exactly have time to soak and enjoy it. No, a quick rinse and then it was off to salvage the best clothes that Vaughn had. With a heavy weight on his heart, he pulled out his only business outfit from the depths of his battered luggage. Standing in the forest clearing, wearing a white shirt with a black tie, dark gray overcoat and the rest to match, combined with his unruly hair and a beard that was crying for a shave.. It all looked very odd. Someone had suggested he trim his facial hair so he wouldn’t look so much like a vagrant, a suggestion he duly obliged to.
All to make sure they looked their best for the mission. That they looked like--not wolves, or at least they would for as long as it took to get inside. If people blamed the pack later, well, they would be right. Rue was to make sure she played the sweet little sister, blinking big brown eyes at the receptionist as they stepped through the window and entered the hospital. Vaughn -- the stoic big brother, handling all the speaking and such.
That was, of course, until they were able to spot Hugo. Rue remembered his face--she had been at the ball, running away from him, and now she was here to free him. Strange how the tables turn, isn’t it? Now they were on the same side. He was being held in the Potions and Plant Poisoning Ward, as had been uncovered to them, not because he had been poisoned but to keep him in isolation--to make sure he wouldn’t help them anymore. Rue wondered just who he had been fighting for, who she was about to help now. Someone she remembered? It couldn’t be one of the pack or she would know. Teresa was off to save her own brother herself.
As they made their way up to the ward, Vaughn kept his hand on Rue’s shoulder, as if he was just making sure the little kid didn’t stray far off. In truth, he kept her close just so they could apparate out of there as soon as possible. While the pack cared little for legalities, Rue was certainly not ready to learn to apparate on her own--they didn’t need her torn to bits by her own incompetence. The presence of Vaughn’s hand on her shoulder was somehow both comforting and nerve-wracking at the same time--warm, but a reminder that she was about to put herself in danger, her first real mission.
The ward, of course, was packed to the brim with people. Some looked rather pale, no doubt after ingesting the wrong mushrooms. One patient seemed to be uncontrollably giggling--it made Rue even crack a bit of a smile. Healers were hurrying back and forth, bringing bottles of antidotes and calming draughts. It was a completely ordinary day.
Vaughn approached the receptionist, inquiring about the whereabouts of Hugo. The receptionist wasn’t too keen on broaching the subject, but after a few minutes of Vaughn being very insistent that they absolutely must see the boy and bring him gifts from his family -- and Rue faking being upset about not being able to see her other big brother, the receptionist caved in and directed them to a door at the very end of the ward.
Rue put a hand over the pocket where her wand was as Vaughn knocked and opened the door. She knew they were meant to get in and out as clean as possible, no injuries, only damage to get out, but just in case… She didn’t want to let Verandi down.
The two of them approached Hugo with wide smiles on their faces, chattering away about how they’d missed their dear brother and how they couldn’t wait for him to come home. Rue even flung her arms around him in an affectionate hug, while Vaughn leaned in to give him a pat on the back.
“Hugo, I spoke to the healers, and,” Vaughn said, putting emphasis on his words,
”You might be getting out of here much sooner than you think.”
“You get up, and stick close to us,” Rue whispered.
“We’ve got to grab Vaughn to apparate out of here.”
Thankfully, the room Hugo was in was rather empty, as it sounded like the giggling man in the hallway seemed to be having some problems breathing that required the healers to go attend to him. Using the few brief moments of solitude, Vaughn produced a plastic bag from his jacket pocket, with one swoop of hand showing all of Hugo’s visible belongings into it, and urged him to get dressed. If they had to get him out in a hospital gown, they would, but it wasn’t ideal. He’d freeze as soon as they landed outside.
And then there was a muffled, yet still a loud racket, coming from the floor above them. The hospital became a hornet’s nest. Yelling, alarms, chaos -- had something went wrong? Were the Aurors here, or had one of them started a fight? They didn’t have time to dwell on it. Grabbing both of the kids, Vaughn closed his eyes and didn’t open them until he felt the freezing winter air on his face. They could only hope everyone else made it back to camp safely, with their limbs intact and no Aurors having grabbed on.
Revenge. It was something that Teresa had craved for years, something she had lusted after. She wanted to hurt the people at Hogwarts as much as they hurt her and her brother, bless his stupid soul, had tried to do it on her behalf and he'd failed miserably. He was one of the core reasons that the Trossachs were here, listening to Verandi's orders, right before they tore into St. Mungos like a bat out of hell. They all had their assignments - get in, rescue, cause as much damage as possible, then get the hell out so they could apparate home.
Looking towards her partner, the Cursebreaker, she knew that raising hell wasn't going to be an issue. There was a reason why he'd been in the Trossachs for so long - it was because he did whatever he needed to in order to get the job done. As Verandi finished, Teresa and the Cursebreaker walked towards the window of Purge and Dowse, Ltd., stepping through it and into the lobby of the bustling hospital. Calmly, they spoke among themselves. They didn't need to raise suspicion until they were inside the Janus Thickey ward, a hair's breath away from Theo.
As they reached the locked ward, Teresa took a small, barely audible breath as she pointed her wand towards the door, muttering alohomora. It unlocked with ease, however as they took a step inside... it was swarmed with healers, patients and visitors. There were people everywhere. With a clearing of his throat, the Cursebreaker leapt into action, taking long strides towards the front of the room where a desk sat, a healer situated behind it and jotting down notes on parchment.
BANG! The sound of his fist hitting the wooden surface was enough to have everyone's attention drawn towards him, especially as his voice raised and he started shouting.
With the distraction of the Cursebreaker shouting, Teresa padded towards the very last curtain. Fingers curling around the fabric, she drew it back, letting out a minute sound of relief as she came face to face with her brother.
"Get up. Now," she hissed. Theo's head raised, eyes widening as he scrambled out of the bed and followed her lead.
Half way out of the entry, a hand tugged on Teresa's wrist.
"He's not allowed to leave the ward," a deep voice said.
"Spell damage, you see. It's the hospital rules." Diplomatically, Teresa gave her best smile.
"It's just a bit of air. We'll be back soon. Come on, Theo." Taking a step forward, the grip on her wrist didn't weaken and the sound of footsteps padding towards them met Teresa's ears. It was time. If they didn't act now, they'd never leave.
"FLIPENDO!" Teresa shouted, wand aimed at the person grasping her wrist. Knocked back into the person behind them, Teresa grabbed Theo's hand, setting off on a run towards the door that all of sudden had locks and chains draped over it.
Shit. How were they going to escape? But then, there was a loud explosion and an offset of screams. Sparing a glance over her shoulder, Teresa caught the sight of the side wall, completely blown out, courtesy of the Cursebreaker.
Nodding towards the blown out hole, Teresa dragged Theo through the rubble, trying her damnedest not to trip as they legged it into the hallway, running until there were alone. With the Cursebreaker catching up, Teresa told Theo,
"Grab onto him. Now." With that, she clutched onto the Cursebreaker for dear life, watching her brother do the same before the entire world turned upside down and they had disappeared from where they'd been standing.
