With the capture of Verandi Farley and several high-ranking Trossach members, the British wizarding world has finally caught a break. The rate of rogue werewolf attacks have started dropping at a steady rate and, hopefully, things will stay that way. The Ministry is starting to loosen some restrictions, like not arresting werewolves standing on the street for loitering, however there’s still an obvious power imbalance between wizardfolk and werewolves.
The Cotswolds pack are continuing to advocate for the rights of werewolves and petitioning to change the legislation that has been set in motion by the current Minister for Magic, whilst the remaining Trossachs members are trying to stay out of the spotlight and keep a low profile… for now.
Whilst the British wizarding world seems to have calmed down, the same cannot be said for over in Northern Europe where a rebellion of magical creatures has risen. The state of things has gotten so bad that the European Ministry has enacted protocols to protect those under eighteen whilst their adult witches and wizards fight to keep control of their countries.
Students from Durmstrang have been sent to Hogwarts to keep them safe and those not old enough to attend school have been sent to live with relatives or designated British Ministry officials outside of Europe for the time being.
Will the low rates of werewolf attacks in Britain continue? How long will Durmstrang students stay at Hogwarts? Will the creatures usurp the wizardfolk in Northern Europe? Only time will tell.
SEPTEMBER 2019 It's been a very long, eventful summer in the wizarding world. A baby was stolen, several high ranking Trossach members were imprisoned, and werewolf attacks have drastically dropped as a result. What will happen now school has returned?
MAY 2019 An attempt to capture the beta of the Trossachs has been launched. Were the Aurors successful in their mission? Go read more here!
Positive Traits: caring, protective, somewhat selfless, athletic, enjoys jokes and fun
Negative Traits: bitter over being bitten, prone to tantrums, not concerned with his own safety, impulsive, melancholic, afraid of commitment, indecisive
Quirks and Habits: -Jānis looks so much like his twin that he can switch identities with him sometimes--something that comes in handy when he needs to go somewhere he isn't supposed to.
-He misses being in his home country, and always wears a bracelet with Latvian patterns on it so he can feel connected to it. He believes strongly that the patterns are magical ever since he learned about the magical world.
-He drinks milk all the time, which he uses to give credit to the fact that he's never broken a bone even with all the Bludgers that have hit him over the years.
-Ever since he was bitten, he's taken up smoking and is practically a chimney, although he always does it outside.
Likes: Quidditch, his brother Jēkabs, herbal tea his grandmother makes, pīrāgi, animals, partying (or at least he used to love it)
Dislikes: his brother's girlfriend, gloomy British weather, milk in his tea, not being at home
Boggart: Jēkabs and Laura both dead
Mirror of Erised: himself without werewolf bites, with a Latvian flag hanging behind him
Patronus: lynx
history
1995.
Some people never seem to have luck on their side. Ieva Eglīte was one such person. That must have been why she ended up having identical twins Jēkabs and Jānis when she was barely eighteen, because apparently just one of them wasn't enough. Instead of going to university, she moved into an apartment with her boyfriend Kaspars Smiltiņš and did her best. It was all she could do.
1997.
The twins were two years old and, to put it lightly, a handful. So that was the year when their father decided he couldn't deal anymore--not with the fighting between Ieva and himself and the struggles of raising children. He left town, sending child support but not much else over the years.
2001.
Being an energetic Muggle child would have gotten Jānis in trouble enough, but then there were the strange things that kept happening. How in the world he was supposed to explain how, when he walked by the clock, it suddenly jumped forward to allow them to leave school earlier, he didn't know. He only figured it was somebody mixing up Jēkabs and himself again, as always seemed to happen, and didn't think too much of it.
2006.
That was the year when some people in weird robes showed up at the door, asking to speak to the family. Not only were they there to explain that the twins were wizards, but also to give them a choice: what school they would go to. After all, Latvia didn't have a wizarding school of its own. Durmstrang was a common choice, but there was one problem there--they didn't accept Muggleborns. And as neither of them spoke French, Beauxbatons was out. So it came down to Koldovstoretz or Hogwarts, and Ieva made the choice for them, sending them to Scotland.
2007.
Two Muggleborn boys making the Hufflepuff Quidditch team together after only a year of flying lessons? They weren't quite Potter-level prodigies, but it was clear that Jānis and Jēkabs were naturals at the sport. Maybe it was all their basketball practice as kids that made them such good Chasers. For Jānis, it was something that occupied his mind from the fact that he missed home, and he threw himself into the sport, practicing even when the weather was awful.
2014.
Graduating from Hogwarts as Hufflepuff’s star Chasers meant that Jēkabs and Jānis could have played in the British and Irish Quidditch League, but instead they went home to play for their country’s national team. They started off as reserves, but found themselves in a regular spot in the next couple years as they prepared to compete, hoping to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
2018.
Quidditch World Cup qualifications. The Latvian team wasn't sure that they had a chance to make it very far, but they did their best--they must have, because the Chudley Cannons' coach approached Jānis and Jēkabs, trying to recruit an entirely new team for the next year. As they explained, the team hadn't won a League Cup since 1892, so they were trying to pull in talent from outside Britain. And since the twins had been educated in Britain, they would already be familiar with living there.
It was only when they arrived there to start practice for the season that everything went wrong. They had gone out to a party to celebrate their new jobs, and why would they have thought that a werewolf would be in attendance when the full moon would be coming that night? But it was a trap. Jānis had gone home with someone, expecting a night of fun, but as soon as the moon rose, he was attacked.
If losing his spot on the Cannons, as well as being barred from jobs altogether, wasn't bad enough, then someone else was kicked off the team as well--and into their apartment. Tuuli was going to be the mother of his niece or nephew, though she didn't seem particularly happy about that, not when Jānis was a werewolf. She became his enemy, making everything about being a werewolf even more difficult.
His lips pressed tightly together as he watched the girl forcefully thrust her knife into the very log she was sitting on. He'd tried his best not to catch her by surprise, yet she'd almost tossed the knife out of her hands upon hearing Vaughn approach. He didn't blame her -- she'd been torn out of the careless life of a 13 year old barely a month ago, and no matter how demanding Verandi was, nobody could expect the girl to be perfectly aware of her surroundings at any given moment. Vaughn had been with the clan much longer, and he still was far from the perfect guard dog.
"Lets have some tea." Vaughn said, walking towards the waning fire. He wasn't going to stoke the fire - they needed to save firewood for the coming days, but he still was a wizard and he still had his wand. Soon enough he returned to Rue, holding two tin mugs with herbal tea. "Here," he offered one of the two mugs to the girl. "It should help."
He sat down next to her, the knife creating a barrier between the two. For a few moments he just sat there, enjoying the heat of the tin mug.
"Would you like to talk about anything?" he asked, knowing full well that everyone in this camp was brooding and not very talkative, and as someone who had 3 younger brothers, Vaughn knew that Rue needed someone to talk to, perhaps more than anyone else around.
