With the capture of Verandi Farley and several high-ranking Trossach members, the British wizarding world has finally caught a break. The rate of rogue werewolf attacks have started dropping at a steady rate and, hopefully, things will stay that way. The Ministry is starting to loosen some restrictions, like not arresting werewolves standing on the street for loitering, however there’s still an obvious power imbalance between wizardfolk and werewolves.
The Cotswolds pack are continuing to advocate for the rights of werewolves and petitioning to change the legislation that has been set in motion by the current Minister for Magic, whilst the remaining Trossachs members are trying to stay out of the spotlight and keep a low profile… for now.
Whilst the British wizarding world seems to have calmed down, the same cannot be said for over in Northern Europe where a rebellion of magical creatures has risen. The state of things has gotten so bad that the European Ministry has enacted protocols to protect those under eighteen whilst their adult witches and wizards fight to keep control of their countries.
Students from Durmstrang have been sent to Hogwarts to keep them safe and those not old enough to attend school have been sent to live with relatives or designated British Ministry officials outside of Europe for the time being.
Will the low rates of werewolf attacks in Britain continue? How long will Durmstrang students stay at Hogwarts? Will the creatures usurp the wizardfolk in Northern Europe? Only time will tell.
SEPTEMBER 2019 It's been a very long, eventful summer in the wizarding world. A baby was stolen, several high ranking Trossach members were imprisoned, and werewolf attacks have drastically dropped as a result. What will happen now school has returned?
MAY 2019 An attempt to capture the beta of the Trossachs has been launched. Were the Aurors successful in their mission? Go read more here!
Job: Ancient Runes Professor at Durmstrang {relocated to Hogwarts}
House: N/A Durmstrang Institute Graduate
Face Claim: Hugh Jackman
personality
Positive Traits: allocentric {good for a teacher, can be negative if he doesn't keep it in check}, articulate, discreet, disciplined, educated, loyal, masculine {his words, not mine}, steadfast, thoughtful, urbane, wise and quiet
Negative Traits: formal until very close to a person; it takes a lot to gain that level of trust with this man. Part of him still believes his marriage broke down because not only did he refer to his wife by her first name but also gave her a nickname. Within days she left. It's not a huge leap. Oh, he's extremely superstituous. Believes and actively encourages the patriarchal social conventions (ie eldest male inherits everything, eldest male is the head of the family etc) although he has a major soft spot for Ileana.
Quirks and Habits: - has a wooden worry stone that is charmed to transfer to the left pocket of any pants that he wears. He began using it as a teenager and the ancient rune inscription has been worn off through decades of use. - Darius actively encourages his children to speak in their native Romanian and has had a decent few arguments with ignorant professors who have come to him complaining of the pair doing so during class. He will never swear in any language and he is very strict with students that do swear within earshot of him - he has found writing lines of the words with blood quills to be an effective deterent. - Darius actively avoids anything technological and favours traditional methods such as magically brewing tea and using wood fires for his cooked meals. At home he has all the tools to make his own wine, which he is then able to bring with him to school for the term. He's had many compliments about his homemade wine, with most of his colleagues enjoying the flavours only traditional pressing can release. - Darius can often be found wittling some new project as the feel and smell of the wood in the process soothes his soul.
Likes: -family & building trusting, meaningful relationships, - ancient runes (duh) and the history behind them - respect in general, as well as people who show deep respect for traditions - polite society - the feel and look of wood - all of his furniture and decorations, will be expertly made of wood where it can be helped.
Dislikes: -when his colleagues come to him about his children, - rude people and profanity, - muggles and their petty squabbling, - the destruction of art and culture (especially to modernise areas - he would mark most things as heritage-listed if he could), - man-made fibres (he says they irritate his skin)
Boggart: an alien (the possibility of life in space scares him beyond measure as traditionally, his family is accustomed to invasion but he doubts they would fare well under alien invasion).
Mirror of Erised: A large family with great-great-grandchildren giggling and playing with his long, greyed beard.
Patronus: brown bear
history
- 1996 the Headmaster of Durmstrang Institute, Igor Karkaroff, was tracked down and murdered. As such then Deputy, Victor Dascălu was promoted. The year after his father was made Headmaster, Darius gained the position of Ancient Runes Professor.
- 1997, as a young teacher Darius meets another Romanian witch, Sorina, who was his seventh-year student. In Darius' memories, it was love at first sight. Everything was kept professional, though it was clear to the pair of them that there was more to their relationship. They were discreet the following summer to ensure Darius had no professional repurcussions.
- 1999, Darius & Sorina announce their engagement and marry in the early months of 2000. Sorina tends to the Dascălu estate whilst her new husband returns to life at Durmstrang and it takes a while before the pair bring new life to their family.
- 2003 was a tough summer. Sorina was not a pleasant pregnant lady in the particularly warm weather and was rather loud about how there was no pleasant breeze and why couldn't they move closer to the Danube? Thankfully September finally brought Ileana, the first born disappointingly daughter. Despite being disappointed his first born was not a son, Darius' heart filled immediately with love for the little angel and was thus named after the epitome of female perfection from Romanian folklore. During his paternity leave, Sorina and Darius find out that they are pregnant again. Merlin have mercy.
- 2004, Darius returns home early from his teaching as his new baby is due. The couple has difficulties again as Darius is frustrated by his son's late arrival, well past the due date. The bond deepens between father & daughter as she lives up to her namesake. Constantin is born and the apple of his father's eyes - yet it doesn't stop Darius returning to school on time next term.
- 2015, Darius and the kids return to the Institute unaware that Sorina had had enough. The kids were objectively nightmarish since birth and Sorina had dealt with it mostly by herself for over a decade. Darius receives an owl that explained she wanted nothing more to do with the Dascălu family. He wasted no time in getting the kids to his office for a family chat. This was not their fault. Sorina clearly never should have been a wife nor mother and they needed to know that. Within the month, Darius reads of the engagement of Sorina Balan to another man. The newspaper went up in flames that day.
- 2019, Darius is none too pleased by the news that the Durmstrang Institute has to relocate, for the foreseeable future, to Hogwarts. He's not a fan of the bland English food nor much else, if he's honest. They were running from giants to a school that blatantly employed a giant hybrid professor.

In the staff debriefing, Zoe had been quite excited by the prospects of the new year with some of the restrictions lifting and the Trossachs terror regime coming to an end... then the new teachers and students from the prestigious Durmstrang Institute were announced and Zoe was even more excited. Some of her favourite teenaged memories were of European backpackers and their Devil May Care attitudes to literally everything.
Her experience thus far of the faculty? Not nearly as pleasant. One of them appeared to be the very embodiment of the horrid people that had tortured Jack in those dark years when he was a student at Hogwarts - in the five minute exchange, Zoe had somehow been made to feel as small as a flea on a mouse that scurried in the basement, too afraid to scamper into an actual house. The Australian, muggleborn Muggle Studies professor was very probably the bottom of the food chain, despite being Head of Hufflepuff and a very accomplished professor. She just wished that she hadn't had shown her wandless magic weakness when the Durmstrang teacher had rapped on her classroom door by mistake. Zoe's bright blue eyes glanced in the Professor-in-Question's direction and shivered under the cold, hard glare that was returned. The woman quickly diverted her gaze towards a much friendlier face - Jack. Watching his address made Zoe tingle in all the right places and if she caught his gaze, she'd raise a glass with a nod that only the privvy knew meant I have plans for you.
"... the Hogwarts Blitz, eh Fleur?" Zoe asked with a chuckle, referring to the last time the British went up against these people. There were so many nationalities that attended Durmstrang, she knew, but to remember them all? "Lets just hope we fair better than the monks in the monastery did all those years ago..." she was pretty sure the person she encountered earlier today was a direct descendant of those Vikings that decimated the English coastline over a thousand years ago. Yeesh.
Zoe glanced out into the crowd to watch Alex as the new students marched in like a tiny malitia. She wanted to comfort him, to stroke his hair and cuddle him tight because he was such a little worry-wart... but that wouldn't be cool. Besides, the wine glass before her was begging to be drowned despite the knot in her muggleborn stomach. "Well, Profs, here's to an exciting and safe new year!" she toasted her colleagues. "Don't worry, I'm a long way from home too and the castle grows on you quick enough... as does my accent, I promise," she smiled sheepishly, having found she was getting much better with the Russian accent since she'd been spending quality time with the local baker. Hopefully there were more friendly ones like him amongst her new colleagues. Maybe not quite as friendly. Three or more friends with benefits under the one (very large) roof? Whenever would she find the time to mark all those assignments? ? ?
