With the capture of Verandi Farley and several high-ranking Trossach members, the British wizarding world has finally caught a break. The rate of rogue werewolf attacks have started dropping at a steady rate and, hopefully, things will stay that way. The Ministry is starting to loosen some restrictions, like not arresting werewolves standing on the street for loitering, however there’s still an obvious power imbalance between wizardfolk and werewolves.
The Cotswolds pack are continuing to advocate for the rights of werewolves and petitioning to change the legislation that has been set in motion by the current Minister for Magic, whilst the remaining Trossachs members are trying to stay out of the spotlight and keep a low profile… for now.
Whilst the British wizarding world seems to have calmed down, the same cannot be said for over in Northern Europe where a rebellion of magical creatures has risen. The state of things has gotten so bad that the European Ministry has enacted protocols to protect those under eighteen whilst their adult witches and wizards fight to keep control of their countries.
Students from Durmstrang have been sent to Hogwarts to keep them safe and those not old enough to attend school have been sent to live with relatives or designated British Ministry officials outside of Europe for the time being.
Will the low rates of werewolf attacks in Britain continue? How long will Durmstrang students stay at Hogwarts? Will the creatures usurp the wizardfolk in Northern Europe? Only time will tell.
SEPTEMBER 2019 It's been a very long, eventful summer in the wizarding world. A baby was stolen, several high ranking Trossach members were imprisoned, and werewolf attacks have drastically dropped as a result. What will happen now school has returned?
MAY 2019 An attempt to capture the beta of the Trossachs has been launched. Were the Aurors successful in their mission? Go read more here!

Standing at a bench in Greenhouse Two with her blonde hair pulled up into a messy bun and her dragon hide gloves pulled over her hands, Grace tended to a Bubotuber plant. Biting her lip in concentration as used her nimble fingers to squeeze the swellings with one hand, her other hand carefully held a bottle to collect the liquid that dripped from the swellings themselves.
Her aim for today was to collect as many bottles of Bubotuber pus as she could and dilute because she knew that currently some of the younger Hufflepuff students were struggling with their self-image especially as they blossomed into young adults and acne was beginning to form over their faces. Grace knew from experience that a lot of things were hard to deal with as a teenager, but this didn't need to be one of them. Not when there was such a readily available solution.
Hearing the tell tale sound of footsteps approach, Grace lost her concentration for a millisecond and let out a pained yelp as some of the Bubotuber pus splashed onto her upper arm, leaving a big, yellow boil in it's wake. Dang it, she'd have to see the matron in the hospital wing about that one after she'd finished up.

Back in the greenhouses again for her daily check-up of the plants, Nadya made her way among the rows of leaves and branches and blossoms and the occasional moving tendril of something magical, pushing those gently away from her face with gloved hands, but always gently, never wanting to destroy or anger the plants. If she had any inclination to deal with noisy first-years on a regular basis, she might have been aiming for Professor Skårsgard's job in a few years, but as it was, she was simply one of the more dedicated Herbology students at the school. What would they do when she was gone? Would the professor take care of all the greenhouses herself, or was there really anyone as good with green things as Nadya felt herself to be?
A short cry of pain snapped the blonde out of her thoughts, informing her that she was not alone in the greenhouse after all. Well, it was true that they were all allowed to be in this one, so she shouldn't be too surprised. It was one of the girls who had newly joined the N.E.W.T. class this year in front of the Bubotubers, collecting pus, and really Nadya would have thought that by the sixth year someone should know to be careful with that sort of thing, but she held her tongue. Perhaps it was just an accident. Even Nadya had accidents in the greenhouses, though this was something she preferred not to admit.
"That looks like it hurts." The Slytherin's words were simple and straight to the point, no need to say anything other than the truth as she looked down at the girl. "I think there should be some plants with healing properties in here. Try not to spill any more while I look?"

When the person who had entered the greenhouse walked into Grace's line of vision, the Hufflepuff girl was kicking herself because of all the people she could make herself look silly in front of... why did it have to be Nadezhda? Not that she knew the girl very well, but she certainly admired her after watching her from afar in several of their NEWT classes.
"It's, um... yes. It's stinging, like a stinging hex would, I imagine. Not... not that I've ever had one of those thrown at me. After all, it's kind of - I don't really want one aimed at me either because... because... um, because it would hurt," she said, before biting her lip nervously. She was babbling something terrible, and she really needed to stop that before she made herself look like even more of a fool.
At the girl's offer to find her some plants to help soothe the painful boil, Grace nodded gratefully. "Yes, yes please," she said Her cheeks flushed pink however as Nadezhda advised her not to 'spill any more' but instead of telling her that she'd been distracted, she kept that to herself. "I... yes, okay. Um. I... I could repay you? Somehow? I don't know... you don't look like you need any bubotuber pus, but perhaps... some other way?"

"Hold still. I'll find something." Nadya turned to look at the plants behind her, searching for something that would take the sting out of the injury. She was only half listening to the Hufflepuff speak at first, her eyes trained on the leaves all around, looking for the patterns of those that could heal skin. While Nadya herself could not remember touching Bubotuber pus, she had plenty of experience with other stinging plants, and was already thinking of a few that had worked for her before. Her eyes landed on the thin leaves and purple flowers of a fluxweed plant, and bending over it, she took off her gloves to deal with the little plant more delicately. She broke off a few flowers at the stem, making sure there was enough liquid inside to apply, and stepped back over a set of pots to find the injured girl.
Putting her gloves back on just in case touching the boils would cause her to have the same, Nadya held out the flowers. "Shall I put it on for you, or would you rather do it yourself?" While she thought that she would probably apply it better with both her hands than the girl could with only one, she didn't want to cause extra pain to someone who seemed nice enough. "I don't really need repayment; I just took some flowers. But perhaps, if you wanted, you could help me with some of the plants I've been growing?" Nadya loved the time she spent in the greenhouse alone, but having some help would get her done with the work early, giving her a chance to sit and enjoy the greenery later.

When Nadezhda started searching for something to soothe the boil, Grace frowned as she glanced down at the boil itself. It was throbbing something awful, and she knew that if Nadezhda didn't find something soon then she might have to make her way up to the hospital wing... for the third time this week. She was certain that the matron was starting to get sick of seeing her face, asking for another calming draught or healing paste because she'd tripped and scraped her skin.
"You're so lovely. Thank you so much," Grace said as she watched the other girl look around, eyes following her as Nadezhda moved calmly about the greenhouse. She couldn't help but think to herself that wow, the girl was beautiful. Like... the type of beautiful you'd find in the pages of magazines, or walking a runway or something. The type that Grace would never be but in some ways, wanted to be. Maybe then people would fancy her or something.
When Nadezhda moved back in front of her, Grace's eyes flicked up to her face almost guiltily. Like she'd done something wrong by admiring how pretty the other girl was. Softly, she nodded at the question of whether Nadezhda should apply the flowers. "I, um... I don't think I could really do it properly. Could you please? That's not, um... it's not to strange, right? I know we don't know anything about each other or... I'm Grace. Gracie, if you want. Um... you're Nadezhda, right? I think we share a few classes," she said, well aware that she was babbling yet again. It was a specialty of hers.
Grace nodded at Nadezhda's suggestion that perhaps she could help her with some plants as well. "I'd like that," she said, offering her a warm smile. "Which plants were you thinking of?"

"Sure. I've used this before, it should work quickly enough. I'll try not to make it hurt any more than it needs to. Hold out your arm." Nadya was not the most patient caretaker, and even if she did know plenty about healing plants, she was better at picking the right ones than being soothing to those she was using them on. Even having a little sister didn't teach her how to be comforting. Still, Grace seemed nice even if she babbled far more than Nadya ever did. Most times, she found that incredibly annoying, but she could put up with it while she applied the herbs. The girl was in pain, after all, if she'd compared it to a stinging hex.
Squeezing some of the liquid to the outside of the flowers and stems, which was the real source of their healing powers, Nadya prepared to lay them on the boil. It really did look unpleasant, full of nasty yellow swelling, something so painful coming from what had seemed to be just a little drop of pus. She studied Grace's face, wondering why she needed just so much pus as she was collecting--her skin didn't need all that, especially by the time it would be diluted!
"Ah, and yes, we do share a few classes," she said as she worked. "Just Nadya is fine, if you want. That's the short form. It might be easier to pronounce." She took Grace's wrist, starting to dab the flowers on the boil. "I'm growing dittany in greenhouse four, actually. Since I used healing herbs for you, I'd like help with that one."

Nadezhda was a bit more straight-forward and direct than Grace was used to when it came to caretaking but she wasn't rude, and so Grace moved her arm as she was instructed to do without a moment's hesitation. Curiously, as she waited for Nadya to apply the herbs, she asked, "Do you, um... is this what you want to do after school? Healing?" Based on how quickly Nadya was able to locate healing plants, she'd be great at it. But her beside manner would need some work, not that Grace would say that aloud.
As Nadya worked the liquid from the flowers, Grace watched her curiously because it was always good to see the way that other people did thing, right? She wanted to observe her method, maybe being that touch bit older, Nadya had a way of doing things that Grace hadn't learned yet. "You're good at that. You must have a lot of practice working with plants," she told the girl softly.
"Nadya," Grace repeated, nodding. It was definitely less of a mouthful than Nadezhda, which truthfully Grace wasn't too confident pronouncing in the first place. She'd hate to have butchered her name. At first, when Nadya started dabbing the flowers onto Grace's boil, she hissed but then... then, it started to feel a bit better, the pain subsiding slowly.
When she heard Nadya say the word 'dittany,' Grace's mind instantly raced. She knew it was a healing herb, just as Nadya said, but she also knew when mixed with silver, it healed werewolf bites. Apprehensively, not quite knowing where Nadya sat on the whole werewolf issue, Grace asked, "What are you planning on using the, um... dittany for? Are you using it by itself, or mixed with anything?"

Nadya blinked. Perhaps Grace was more perceptive than she'd thought a girl who spilled Bubotuber pus on herself would be, because she hadn't yet met anyone who guessed exactly what her plans for after school would be, especially not so quickly! It wasn't really a secret, but Nadya did know it didn't seem like the most obvious career for her. Yes, if she had her way, she'd probably live in a hut in the woods instead of having any job at all, but the world needed her. Specifically, beings needed someone to help them out in a London controlled by a Ministry who clearly didn't care for them.
"You're actually just right, about the healing thing," she said, but then her voice got softer. "It's just--I don't tell people that, because I don't know if my N.E.W.T. scores will be good enough to work at St. Mungo's." Nadya hated so many of her classes that she knew this was a reasonable worry. She was sure she could pull off an Outstanding in Herbology, but with everything else, she wasn't so sure. She hoped Grace wouldn't mock her for it.
Finishing dabbing the crushed flowers onto Grace's skin, she stepped back, taking off her gloves. "There. That should start working in a couple minutes. We can start walking to the other greenhouse." To her eyes, the boil already seemed to be shrinking, but only Grace would know when the pain actually stopped.
"Of course, dittany is the most powerful healing herb there is," Nadya murmured, half responding to the other girl and half talking to herself. "But that's why it's so important to grow--it can heal injuries from nearly anything." She hoped very much that her own efforts at growing it would be successful, so that she could donate it to those who might need it. That was something she could actually do from the castle that felt so much like a prison.

When the words 'you're actually just right,' came flowing from Nadya's voice, Grace blinked in surprise because... she was? She'd taken an educated guess, but she hadn't actually thought she'd be correct. "I... I want to be a Healer too, but I don't know if my marks will... I'm good at healing when people help, but I struggle with other subjects," Grace told Nadya, her voice going soft. So she knew where the girl was coming from. "I... I won't tell anyone, if you don't want me too, but maybe... maybe we could help each other? I mean, I'm okay at some subjects, and I'm sure you are too, and maybe with our... our powers combined..." Grace drifted off, waiting for Nadya's verdict. Hopefully she wouldn't crush the idea entirely.
"It's starting to feeling better already, it's not stinging as much," Grace said brightly as she looked down at her arm once more. Thank goodness that worked and not only that but, "I'm glad you were the one to walk in. I... at least you knew what to do. I don't think I would've been able to do all that one-handed." At Nadya's suggestion they start moving, Grace nodded and stood up properly, twisting the caps onto her bottles of bubotuber pus, and putting them into her bag. Then slinging the bag over her shoulder, Grace started walking, waiting for Nadya to lead the way to whichever greenhouse they were heading for.
Grace nodded as Nadya replied with dittany being the most powerful healing herb and such. "I, um... do you have many injuries you need to heal, or are you making a little stash of it just in case?" Grace asked curiously. "'Cause I have... I have bruise removal paste that I've collected in case of an 'emergency... or if I trip over." Which she did quite often, unfortunately.

Nadya smiled softly when she heard that the healing herbs were working after all, and turned back to Grace. "That's a good sign. I hope the boil goes away soon. It still might take a bit more time, but it's better than going to the hospital wing, isn't it?" Nadya did not like the hospital wing, because being stuck in bed was practically torture to her. And they always insisted on that, for even the most minor injuries--it was awful. Better to fix things herself, as she had just done. And that was a good sign for her healing capabilities, wasn't it? If only she could say the same for other magic...
"You're right, maybe we could help each other with classes," she added. She hated asking for help, but if Grace had offered, it wasn't really asking, right? And besides, it was better her than most of the others in her classes. Even to her friend and roommate Scarlett, she could never admit her struggles. She knew it was mostly because she hated school, not magic, but somehow it was still hard to convince herself to concentrate on her studies. "As long as we do it in private. Maybe in here sometime? I don't need help with Herbology, but it might be a nice place to study." She bit her lip as she turned back around to walk to the other greenhouse, continuing to consider the offer. Was Grace too talkative? Would she tell everyone about the girl who was supposed to be a magical creature but was still confused by her Charms homework?
Grace's next words were about something far more comfortable to the Slytherin. "It's always good to keep many kinds of herbs around, just in case. What do you use to make the bruise removal paste? I could make that, too." Nadya spent enough time leaping in and out of trees that she knew it might be useful.

"I think the matron is sick of seeing me there anyway," Grace admitted sheepishly, ducking her head. Her parents who she wrote to every few days were probably getting a bit too concerned of her writing that she visited the hospital wing so often too. In her letters, she could lie of course, but that wasn't in her nature. Grace was a truth teller, through and through.
When Nadya agreed that they could help each other out, Grace was smiling once more because oh, thank goodness. Okay. This was a really good thing. "I... I think so too, it'd be best to be somewhere private like here or the North Wing or an empty classroom? I don't - I know a lot of people use the library, but I always feel like someone is watching me there," she said, realising as the words left her mouth that oh, she sounded a bit parnaoid, didn't she? "I'm okay with... with Herbology and History of Magic and theoretical stuff like that. It's just the, um, the practical side of things. I feel like a lot of the time, my wand just won't - I mean, it's not my wand's fault - but it sparks a lot when I try to produce spells in class."
"Oh, a bunch of things! Dittany, I think that's an obvious ingredient, and then shrivelfig, lacewing flies, some flobberworm mucus... you can buy it from the shops, but I always run out so quickly so I usually just make my own. I can write down the recipe, if you'd like? Maybe show you how I do it?" Grace suggested, tucking some blonde hair behind her ear and biting her lip. It wasn't very often that she demonstrated for others, but Nadya had helped her so much that it was only fair, right?

Maybe, Nadya thought, studying together might be even more useful than she had thought, because she was the total opposite: she could do alright with practical things, but the second she had to sit down and memorize pages of boring information, all hope of success was gone. She was especially glad she'd been able to drop History of Magic at N.E.W.T. level, knowing that even the help of a classmate wouldn't fix how much she hated the subject in the first place. Her favorite part of Herbology, too, was actually working with the plants, no matter if she had to wear earmuffs or dragonhide gloves just to re-pot them. Yes, this could work out, if Grace actually had some way to help memorize things once and for all.
"I think I'm better with practical things, honestly," she explained. "It's always essays and exam questions that cause me trouble."
She thought it was strange, too, that Grace's wand seemed to be the problem. "Are you sure it's not an issue with your wand? I know they can backfire pretty badly if they get broken, or if they don't bond to you." Nadya's own wand was a rather steady combination of oak and unicorn hair, so at least she had never had those issues. She felt perhaps it was able to balance out the veela temper she was supposed to have.
"But are you good at Potions then, since you don't have to use your wand much?" Help with that would be best of all if she wanted to work in healing, because Nadya's hatred of the dungeons had caused her much trouble with that class. "Maybe we can start with your healing paste."

It was quite interesting to hear that Nadya struggled with the theoretical side of things, the complete opposite of Grace who, most of the time, did okay with things like essays and exams. They made her nervous, but not nearly as much as wand work. "Maybe you could help me out on the practical side of things," Grace suggested, "and I can... can help with the essays and exam thing, if you'd like? I don't know how useful the tips will be though..."
Nadya's question had Grace pausing for a second before she shook her head, frowning. "I... I think it seems like a wand thing on the outside but I worry a lot and get too much in my head and I think that's probably... probably some of the matter," Grace tried to explain. She had a good wand, one made of willow which was known for healing, yet maybe she wasn't good enough at magic for it to work for her, a thought that was always lingering in her mind.
'Are you good at potions?' Grace nodded in response to Nadya asking, albeit a bit hesitantly. "I... since it doesn't require much magic, I'm okay at it, I think. It's kind of like cooking, you just follow a recipe," Grace said. Although, unlike when she cooked at home, she didn't have somebody watching her every move and worried she'd burn herself. "The healing paste sounds good... did you want to start it now?"
All this talk about plants and magic and nerves was lovely, but Grace couldn't help but be curious. "What else do you enjoy doing? Other than herbology, that is?"

"As easy as following a recipe? It never feels so." Nadya wished that her potions always turned out like her cooking. It seemed like it should be the same sort of skill, but her Invigoration Draughts never turned out quite as good as her pancakes. But she really did need to improve her potions if she wanted to get anywhere with this healing plan. A bruise paste would be much simpler than more difficult healing potions, and she had the rest of the year to catch up with those. "We can harvest dittany here, of course, and there should be shrivelfigs around here as well... Does it take a long time to make?"
She rather hoped that she wouldn't end up getting irritated by Grace's cheerfulness eventually. It would be good to have another person willing to help her out with school things. Her older sister, Vera, had always done that, but then she had graduated; her younger sister, Lyuba, would never be able to, even if she had been Nadya's age. She was more hopeless than Nadya herself with a cauldron.
But Grace reminded her a little of Lyuba, Nadya thought, just without the intense air of confidence that the youngest Kareva liked to exude. The realization made her like Grace a little bit more, though. She wouldn't have to put up so much defensiveness around the sixth-year--at least she hoped it would go that well.
"I like walks in nature, picking berries and mushrooms--but of course, that's a little bit like even more Herbology," she told Grace, smiling. "I like singing, but I'm not really that good." Nadya could guess that she would be a natural at dancing, but singing was more of a question. She had never done it in front of enough people to judge if she was any good. "And what about you?"
Post by GRACE LONGBOTTOM on Jun 23, 2019 4:55:27 GMT
"It's kind of the same though, isn't it? You gather and prepare your ingredients, then follow the steps in the book. But instead of a meal, you have a potion," Grace said, a smile sliding onto her lips once more. Despite her clumsiness, Grace was actually a decent cook. It was something her mother had taught her growing up, often because she needed help with the food for The Leaky Cauldron over the busy holidays. She'd hovered around Grace the first few times, but now she trusted her not to cut herself or anything now. Nadya's question of if it took a long time to make the bruise healing paste had Grace shaking her head. "It takes about an hour, or so... just when it's applied, it takes up to an hour to start working."
"Oh, wow. You sound like your perfect dream home would be in a forest, surrounded by the elements," Grace said, returning the smile that Nadya shared with her. It truly sounded like the forest was the girl's happy place. When the question was turned back on Grace, she 'hmm'ed' for a moment before saying, "I really love art... I do a lot of sketches and drawings. Swimming is something I love to do a lot as well. Oh, and reading. I'm always picking up new books."
